Guaymas, Sonora

GUAYMAS

We left Kino Bay with our planned route mapped out in Peter's head. East of the town of Miguel Aleman, way before entering Hermosillo, would be a route No. 061 that heads south, allowing us a shortcut to the main highway 15. After passing through Miguel Aleman, we kept our eyes out for this mysterious road. As we got closer and closer to Hermosillo, we realized that somehow we had missed the turn. Being as it was around lunchtime, we stopped at the impeccably clean taco stand we had eaten at en route to Kino bay.  After another great, inexpensive meal we inquired about the way south on 15 and the nice gentleman that manages the stand told us the way and also informed us that the shortcut we had wanted to take was a bad road. Very rough. Good news!

Leo's Inn in Playa Miramar, Guaymas, is a one star hotel on the beach of Bacochibampo bay. We are in a room on the second floor with a 4 to 5 star view of the Sea of Cortez.  Contrasting beds: one very firm with a single mattress on a wooden box frame; the second is like a block of jello. One sits on it, it sags and moves to the side. A second human body seems beyond its capacity. Peter held his breath as Louis climbed aboard. Just 2 nights. Just get us through 2 nights without dying...

The coils could be felt, subtly digging into the body here and there. Peter and Louis ventured onto the jello bed of coils the first night and it created a wedge that attempted to funnel both of them to the center. Being diplomatic and minding the other's space, it was like "Here we are now. Will sleep even come at all tonight?"

Surprisingly it did and all slept ok. Christelle said she could position her body to avoid most of the coils. Peter and Louis put an extra blanket between the mattress and fitted sheet for increased padding. The jello bed did not give up the ghost and no one mentioned throwing in the towel and leaving. Angelina, Louis and Peter braved the brisk temperature of the sea and went for a swim. This gave Peter the courage to take a shower. Housemaid said "Hay agua caliente". The owner said "If you let the hot water run for awhile it will become tepid". Christelle countered these claims by stating "There is no hot water, period". Peter confirms what Christelle said.

Leo's Inn is a hidden jewel.  It's the building on the left. The terrace next to our bedroom upstairs is fantastic. It is the only hotel in this residential area. The owner is an old lady who does what she can...

Guaymas is a very lively place and the locals seem to be very nice and peaceful
